Fathomless Waters

In Short

Fathomless Waters is a card-based strategy game all about arranging powerful swarms of strange creatures by trying to satisfy their transformation conditions, while doing the opposite to your enemies.

Story

A few years ago, strange creatures emerged from the deepest depths of the oceans and decimated all existing marine life on the planet. Ever since, as lead scientist at the Marine Restoration Foundation, you’ve fully dedicated yourself to figuring out exactly what makes these unusually hostile creatures tick. And recently, you’ve made a discovery that might finally turn things around. You found a way to use these creatures against each other...

How to play

With each encounter, your goal is to defeat or revert the transformations of all attacking enemy creatures.

At the start of each turn, you draw 8 creatures. Each creature has a points-value it will provide to your total attack power once deployed on the field, but only when its transformation condition is met. You can place as many or as few cards as you like before clicking "Attack", causing each enemy adjacent to one of your transformed creatures to take damage equal to your swarm's attack power. You repeat this process until you attack using the last of the creatures in your hand, at which point your turn is over.

After your turn ends, all transformed enemy creatures will attack. Each enemy targets a card in your deck, field or discard pile & remove it from play. Once you run out of cards to play, it's game over.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW:

  • You can attack multiple times in one turn. Attacking doesn't end your turn. Though you might be tempted to create one big swarm of 8 creatures & unleash a devastating attack, sometimes multiple smaller attacks are the better way to achieve your goal.
  • Any of your (transformed) creatures carry the full attack force of your entire swarm. Placing a couple small creatures by themselves, away from the rest of your swarm, in order to target more enemies can often be a great strategy (since they still benefit from the attack power the other portions of your swarm built up).
  • Only transformed creatures attack. Keep in mind that a creature must be transformed before it will do anything. Placing a creature away from the rest (like described above) can be a good idea, but it won't do you any good if you have no way to meet the transformation condition of that creature!
  • The term "swarm" refers to all creatures (either yours or your enemies) currently deployed to the field
